It took until the last match of the last tournament of the year to determine our Player of the Year for 2017, but Mike Rezai lunged across the finish line with a 9-6 victory over second place Edwin Jones in the December Main Bracket final to take Player of the Year honors for the first time in the current incarnation of the Columbus Backgammon Club.

Mike maintained an impressive 66% winning percentage over a total of 47 matches, while winning 2 monthly tournaments, and coming in second 3 times. This gave him a total of 439 points for the year, and a margin of 49 points over second place. Mike lead for most of the year, only giving up the lead in October, when Edwin Jones jumped ahead briefly.

Mike will receive an engraved doubling cube which will be presented to him early next year in recognition of his achievement, and as a reminder to all of his opponents that he is the 2017 Player of the Year!

December 2017 Monthly Tournament Results

10 players came out this month to watch the drama unfold as the player of the year was decided in the last tournament for 2017. It couldn’t have happened in a more exciting manner than if it had been planned, with Mike Rezai and Edwin Jones meeting in the Main bracket final to determine the winner for the month AND the year! In the end, Mike Rezai prevailed, winning Player of the Year honors, in an exciting match that was tied at 6-6 at one point.

In the consolation final, Maron Cury defeated David Rearick to win third place for the month and jump into fourth place overall in the Masters Points standings.

We had a group of 10 players this month, as well as a marching band (yes, really!), all there to see Maron Cury win his first tournament of the year in the Main Bracket final over current Masters Points leader Mike Rezai.

In the consolation final, Trevor Dierkes defeated Chris Yep to win third place and maintain pace with Mike Rezai in the Masters Points standings.

The top three places in the Masters Points race shuffled around a little bit, but it proves to be an exciting December tournament as they all ended November within 20 points of each other:

  1. Mike Rezai (369)
  2. Trevor Dierkes (356)
  3. Edwin Jones (350)

Chouette Schedule Change

Club member Mike Rezai has offered to take over hosting duties for the club chouettes, effective in November. In addition, he is increasing the frequency of the chouettes, resulting in a chouette every Tuesday evening at 6:30PM in our normal meeting place at the food court at Polaris Mall!

The new dates have been added to the upcoming events calendar on the website.

We had a total of 12 players come out to start the last quarter of the year, including one new visiting face to our club – Stan Eaton, who was in from the Beavercreek area. This month, the main bracket final was Edwin Jones and Joe Calvaruso. Edwin Jones came out on top to win his second tournament of the year. Joe’s result was his second runner-up of the year so far.

In the consolation final, Trevor Dierkes defeated Mike Rezai to win third place.

Edwin’s win catapults him into first place in the Masters Points race currently by 14 points over Mike Rezai. Trevor Dierkes continues to pace them both in third place, only 17 points behind Mike. Joe Calvaruso made up a lot of ground this month to move into 4th place overall. While it seems to be a 3-player race to the finish, mathematically, the top six in the standings are still alive to win Player of the Year:

  4. Joe Calvaruso
  5. Dale Berlin
  6. Jon Stephens

We bumped up against our current attendance record of 14 again this month, which was impressive as it was NFL opening weekend. This month, the main bracket final was Jason Marshall and Trevor Dierkes. Jason Marshall won, gaining his first tournament win of the year.

In the consolation final, Joe Calvaruso defeated Mike Rezai to win third place.

With these results, Trevor just edges past Edwin to take second place in the Masters Points standing by one point, and gains a little bit on current the leader, Mike Rezai, with just 3 tournaments left in the year.

We had 11 players in this month’s tournament. Our main bracket final was Trevor Dierkes and Edwin Jones, with Trevor winning that matchup to claim his second tournament win of the year. This was also Edwin’s second runner-up result.

In the consolation final, Dale Berlin was paired with Eric Verway-Cohen. Dale came out on top, giving him 3rd place and his third result in 4 tournaments this year. This was also Eric’s best finish to date!

A field of 12 players competed in this month’s tournament. The main bracket final paired Dale Berlin against Mike Rezai, with Dale winning to claim his second tournament win of the year. This also gave Mike his second runner-up of the year.

In a consolation final truncated by time constraints to a 3-point match, Edwin Jones came out on top over Mary Hickey, giving him a 3rd place finish.

With this month’s tournament in the books, we are now halfway through the year! 11 players came out this time around, with some surprising results. The top 4 in the Masters Points standings all had early exits this time around, allowing the field to catch up!

This month’s main bracket final consisted of Jon Stephens and Mary Hickey, with Jon getting his first tournament win of the year. In the consolation final, Trevor Dierkes won over Stu Cohen. These results give us 6 different tournament winners and 6 different runners-up in the first 6 months of the year.

The one week delay in our tournament this month didn’t prevent us from tying our standing record of 14 entrants for a monthly tournament! Those in attendance saw David Rearick best Mike Rezai in the Main bracket final – giving us our fifth different tournament winner in 5 months.

In the Consolation final, Sam Mitzutani won against Edwin Jones for his first podium spot in our club.

Next month, the new Ikea store will be opening at Polaris the same weekend that our monthly tournament would be held. In light of the chaos this is bound to create in the area, and the fact that Father’s Day is on the 18th, I am opting to move the date for the June tournament to June 4th. See you then!
